Sep. 09, 1971 - Underwater TV Colour Camera. A frogman tests a new Japanese-made compact colour television camera 25-meter below the Pacific Ocean off Izu, west of Tokyo for the Fuyo ocean Development and Engineering company of Tokyo. Results were exceptionally clear. Below the surface of the water the camera and lights only weigh 1.5 kilograms, against its out-of-water weight of 26 kilograms. Unlike previous models using three camera tubes to pick up the three primary colours, the new camera uses a special Vidicon which reproduces colour images by means of a dual stripe interference filter. It can be connected with a colour viodo tape recorder for speedy recording and replaying. The new camera is designed for observing and recording various undersea operations.
