1973 - A new memory for airborne computers - fabricated from magnetically coated tungsten wire - is checked by (left to right) Richard O. McCary, William D. Barber, and Dr. Fred E. Luborsky at the General Electric research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. The new memory - first of its type to use tungsten wire - is four times smaller than conventional plated wire memories, packs four times more information, and requires only one-half the power to operate. Based on a new wire-electroplating process developed by these researchers, the new memory is expected to find wide application in aerospace and industrial markets.
