1973 - A new memory for airborne computers - fabricated from magnetically coated tungsten wire - is checked by (left to right) Richard O. McCary, William D. Barber, and Dr. Fred E. Luborsky at the General Electric research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. The new memory - first of its type to use tungsten wire - is four times smaller than conventional plated wire memories, packs four times more information, and requires only one-half the power to operate. Based on a new wire-electroplating process developed by these researchers, the new memory is expected to find wide application in aerospace and industrial markets. It is designed by the Aerospace Electronic Systems Department of Ge's Aircraft Equipment Division, Utica N.Y.
