Oct. 10, 1976 - The gleaming parabola which the midday sun describes on the aluminium skin of the world's first steel net cooling tower can be seen as a symbol of excellent engineering achievement. The cooling tower structure, supplied and erected by Krupp and Ingenieurbüro Leonhardt und Andrä for the consortium Balcke-Durr/GEA, has now reached completion. The 181 m high tower, which can be seen from afar, is located at Schmehausen, 40 km east of Dortmund, on the site of the Westfalen power station where it will serve to dissipate the new 300-MW nuclear power plant. This will be effected by non-polluting, natural-draft by cooling. The cooling water heated in the reactor flows through heat exchangers at the base of the tower, is cooled there by a stream of air rising in the tower of an recycled loss-free to the power station. This cooling system prevents the formation of the water vapour clouds which result from wet cooling and does not disturb the biological balance of rivers and streams by thermal pollution. A further advantage to be considered is the low weight of the tower which at 8, 000 tonnes represents only one third of the weight of a conventional cooling tower of comparable capacity
