May 05, 1979 - Garbage Into Gas. An experimental gas purification unit has been developed at the General Electric Research and Development Center in Schenectady, N.Y. to test the feasibility of purifying methane gas from landfills and sewage treatment plants across the country and adding it to the nation;s natural gas pipelines. Each day, the natural decay of organic matter in anaerobic sewage treatment plants, landfills, and even cow manure digesters produces millions of standard cubic feet of methane that could be burned in homes and industry if the impurities could be removed. Mechanical engineer Gunnar E. Walmet, leader of the GE research project, holds up a device for testing the membranes that are at the heart of the purification uit. The special semi-permeable membranes hold back the methane but allow most of the contaminants to pass through. Developed under contract from the Southern California Gas Company, a small experimental test purification unit is now being field tested at a large sewage treatment plant in Los Angeles, California
