Aug. 08, 1980 - Super Coating. Metallurgical Engineer John R. Rairden of the General Electric Research And Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. examines a batch of gas turbine buckets that have received a special corrosion-resistant coating formulated by GE metallurgists. Preliminary laboratory tests indicate that buckets coated with the new material (a proprietary blend of cobalt, chromium, aluminium, and yttrium) should last upwards of 40, 000 hours - three times as long as uncoated buckets - in hostile corrosive environments. The coating is applied using a high-energy, low-pressure plasma spray process that has been the subject of an intensive development program co-sponsored by GE's corporate R&D Center and the company's Gas Turbine Division
