Oct. 10, 1980 - Fast power restoration. Researchers from General Electric and three utility companies have developed a computer-based automation system that could shave hours off the time required to restore electric service in the event of a power failure. With GE's new Probe system, now in the prototype development, it will be possible - within minutes - to locate a trouble spot (such as a downed or short-circuited power distribution line) and automatically re-route electric service around it by remotely opening and closing various switches. Thus, instead of a whole neighborhood being without power while repairs are made, only few homes in the immediate area of the fault would be affected. here, Robert M. Hardy, a member of the Probe development team from the GE Research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. examines a micro-computer circuit board that serves as the brains of an experimental remote unit that is designed to open or close a pole-top switch on command from the Probe systems central computer.
