Jun. 06, 1959 - Britain's Flying Saucer Triumph. At a Saunders Roe yard at Cowes, Isle of Wight on Sunday, Britain's Flying Saucer, three times rose a foot above the ground and hovered for half-an-hour. The flight was a triumph for the men who see this hoverplane - officially the S.R.N.1 - as the cross- Channel ferry of the future and later as a giant ocean going hoverliner, The secret of the saucer is a horizontal fan, which provides a cushion of compressed air supporting it as it travels above the sea or ground. The first saucer is only a two-seater, 34-feet long and 26ft. wide. The S.R.N.1 is the invention of Mr. Christopher Cockerill.
