Jun. 06, 1959 - Britain's flying saucer triumph: At a Sanders-Roe yard at Cowes, Isle of Wight on Sunday, Britain's Flying Saucer, three times rose a foot above the ground and hovered for half-an-hour. The flight was a triumph for the men who see this hoverplane officially the S.R.N. 1 - as the cross Channel ferry of the future and later as a giant ocean going hoverliner. The secret of the saucer is a horizontal fan, which provides a cushion of compressed air supporting it as it travels above the sea or ground. The first saucer is only a two-seater, 34 feet long and 26ft. wide. The S.R.N. 1 is the invention of Mr. Christopher Cockerill.
