Aug. 20, 1966 - Duel In a Tunbridge Wells Park: Repaiers Flashed at Dawn in a park in Tunbridge Wells yesterday- all because a Tory Coyneillor used an unfortunate phrase to a German Student. The Duel was arranged after an argument in a public-house between the Councillor, 37-year old Mr. William Parks -Davis, and the student, 18-years old Horst Zander Seconds and witnesses were appointed. Cinema manager James Lawrence Provided the rapiers. Then the duellists, dressed i traditional Beau Nash frilled white shirts, red Cummerbuds and black tights - faced each other in a park surrounded by 18-century houses. Both were out on the hand in the Duel. Then they agreed that honour had been satisfied, and parted friends. Mr. Parkes- Davies said last night: I never meant to be offensive. I took up the challenge to defend my honour -as a gentle man, but the duel was not serious. Said Mr. Zender: I don't want to repeat what Mr. Parkes -Davies called me, but he keeps saying this sort of thing and I thought it was time he was taught a lesson. Mr. Zander, who is on holiday at Mr. Lawrence's home in Garden-road, Tunbridge Wells is hoping to study at Heidelberg University- German Stronghold of Duelling. For the record - duelling has been banned in Britain since 1845. But last night the local police said they did not think any action would be taken.
