Dec. 12, 1952 - New York Cops In Gun Battle Desperado And A Patrolman Shot: Two men--Charles Mason and Richard Linquist got into a fight outside a bar at 675 Eighth Avenue, New York, recently. The cops arrived to break it up and a moment later Clarence Sims, a Cleveland desperado and Cecil Johnson drove up with the intention of a stick up in her bar. Patrolman George McAuliffe arrived, and hearing that Sim was armed, backed him against the well. The arrival of two more patrolmen Knox and Conlon, diverted McAuliff's attention, and Sim, drawing a.45 dropped McAuliffe with three slugs. The thugs fled in a hail of lead and wild gun battle ensued. It ended with Johnson cowed in surrender and Sim lying in a pool of blood, shot by Patrolman Cornelius O'Shea.
