May 05, 1957 - Battle of Holborn black man keeps police at bay for an hour: Twenty six year old Jamaican Alan Chambers- holding a three ft. spanner in his hand -- barricaded himself in a workshop in Holborn today - and kept police at bay for an hour. He was eventually overpowered and taken by ambulance to hospital. He was working as an engineer in the ground floor workshop of the Prudential Assurance engineers and works department - when he suddenly became violent.
