May 28, 1957 - The Battle of Holborn. black man keeps police at Bay for an hour: Twenty six year old Jamaican Alan Chambers holding a 3ft. spanner barricaded himself in a workshop in Holborn today and kept police at bay for an hour. He was eventually overpowered and taken by ambulance to hospital. He was working as an engineer in the ground floor workshops of the Prudential Assurance engineers and works department when he suddenly became violent. A police Sgt. was injured when trying to reach the screaming man. Photo shows A policeman with truncheon at the ready stands guard as the man still holding the spanner, standing in the corner
