Mar. 27 Anarchist Trial In West Germany Two trials are awakening interest in the Federal Republic of Germany at the moment. In Düsseldorf the first trial against a member of the anarchist underground organisation known as Baader Meinhoff Group has begun. The group schicked the German public with several acts of force since Andreas Baader was freed by force in May 1970 in Berlin. Almost every day the German press brings new headlines about the group which uses the same tactics as the South American city guerillas. The former journalist Andreas Baader wrote a letter from the underground some days ago which he signed with his own fingerprint. With his letter he announced increased combat action. In Düsseldorf the former member of the group, Karl Heinz Ruhland who was arrested by police on December 20th 1970 on trial. Among other things he is incriminating the former Berlin solicitor Horst Mahler of whom he says that he took part in many bank robberies of the Baader Meinhoff group. Mahler, who was thought to have taken part in the freeing of Baader, is in a Berlin jail at the moment because he is believed to have taken part in a bank robbery. In jail he wrote some time ago that the Baader Meinhoff Group is necessarily criminal'. The court in Düsseldorf is heavily guarded and Ruhland is hermetically sealed off. He makes his statements behind bullet-proof glass, because retaliation attacks by the anarchists are expected. Ruhland is planned as chief witness of the group.
