Crimes - Criminals - Judges - Lawyers - Trials

Jun. 30, 1962 - Berlin tunnel builders face communist court: 2 west Berlin students, one employee of the west Berlin senate and two east Berlin citizens are on trial before a communist court in East Berlin. They are charged with Criminal assaults against the east German state border - which is a communist expression for the brick wall and the barbed wire fences built by them to divide Berlin last year. The Criminal assault the five men are accused of in fact is that they digged a tunnel under the wall which was used to get to freedom by a number of people from East Berlin. The five men were trapped by communist police while trying to set up other ways of escape through the Berlin wall. Photo shows a general view of the trial held before the East German high court
