Aug. 17, 1966 - Police guard ring Witney ? Ringed by detectives, John Edward Witney is led to a police van waiting behind West London Court. Ten minutes later, still strongly escorted, Witney wa driven out, past a silent crowd of onlookers. Witney, aged 36, made a two-minute appearance in court yesterday morning charge with the murder of three policeman in Shepherd?s Bush, London. He was ramanded in custody until August 23rd, and was granted legal aid. Witney, of Fernhead Read, Paddington, arrived in the heavily guarded police van. He appeared in the dock handcuffed to two detectives. The charge alleges that ?with others?, he murdered detective sergeant Christopher Head and constables David Wombwell and Geoffrey Fox.
