Dec. 16, 1968 - Safe Gang in ? 100, 000 gold Raid : A gang using a high-powered thermic lance, got away with a ?100, 000 haul of gold and silver. The raiders left a silver trail which led from the bullion fir of J.S. Knight and Sons Lts, in Benjamin street, Smithfield. The raid was discovered early this morning after a burglar alarm rang - probably set off accidentally as the gang were leaving. By the time the first police car arrived, the raiders had vanished. Their haul included sheet gold and silver ingots and granules. The gang left behind a thermic lance and ten oxygen bottles with sets of goggles. Photo shows The raiders thermic lance equipment used in the robbery - pictured at the premises today
