1970 - Students Hijack Japan airliner: Eight Japanese ultra-leftist students brandishing swords, highjacked a JAL 727 airliner carrying 131 passengers soon after it took-off on a domestic flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka and ordered the pilot to fly to North Korea. The students tied and passengers hands with rope they carried, except for several mothers with children. The chief pilot Shinji Ishida with a sword held at his back, told the hijackers he did not have enough fuel to fly to Korea, and the airliner landed at Itazuke where the hijackers allowed 11 adults and 12 children Hundreds of police were ready to sieze the plane but as it was feared passengers would be hurt they made no attempt, as it was believed they hijackers also had bombs, and had threatened to blow up the plane and everyone in it including themselves. The plane took off for North Korea, but as it approached the frontier it was greeted by anti-aircraft fire. The pilot unbeknown to the hijackers landed at Kimpo airport Seoul, South Korea, where the authorities aware of the hijack had disguised the airport to look like a North Korean airport. However the hijackers were suspicious, as no red flags were flying, and there aws no portrait of North Korea Prime Minister Kim Il Sung. Meanwhile Kimpo mechanics let out the air from the nose wheel of the airliner. The latest position is that the plane remains in Seoul, and the passengers and crew are still prisoners of the eight students, who now demand a parley with Japanese Cabinet Ministers, a party of top officials have been flown to Seoul for the purpose.
