May 05, 1971 - Bomb Aboard'-Airline Pays £235, 000 Ransom. Qantas, the Australian airline, was tricked of £235, 000 in sydney yesterday by a hoax bomb threat. A telephone caller demanded the money to save an airborne Boeing 707, with 116 passegers, from being blown up. After the money was handed over, the caller rang again to say there was no bomb onboard, and the Boeing, which had been circling the Sydney area for hours landed ssafely. The first telephone call was at noon, to the Department of Civil Aviation. A man said there was a bomb in a locker at the international terminal at Sydney airport and a similar bomb on a jet bound for Hong Kong. A search at the airport revealed a gelgnite bomb with a trigger system designed to oerpate if the plane descended below 20, 000 ft.
