1973 - £400, 000 Haul By Lone Bandit At Heathrow Airport Diamonds and platinum worth £467, 000 were stolen by an armed bandit who held up a BOAC van at Heathrow. The diamonds had arrived in two boxes aboard a Ghana Airlines plane, and the platinum, in eight boxes, had been flown in from Johannesburg. Both cargoes were collected by a BOAC van driver for delivery to an airport strong room. As the van driver drove away with his cargo he was stopped by a man wearing white overalls and a BOAC anorak, who asked for a lift. The man climbed into the passenger seat and held up the driver with a pistol. He ordered the driver to take the van to the car park. The driver was locked in the van;s cab by the bandit, who then loaded the boxes of diamonds and platinum into a car and drove away.
