Aug. 08, 1955 - QUEEN FREDERICA SENDS HER PERSONAL DOCTOR TO ATTEND TORTURED GIRL. COUPLE ON CRUELTY CHARGES IN ATHENS. It has been reported that Queen Frederica of Greece has sent her personal doctor to report on the condition of twelve year old Spiridoula Rafti - who was recently taken to the Zanion Hospital, Piraeus suffering from severe burns. George Veljades and his wife Antigoni have been charged with torturing the girl by burning her body with an electric iron. The couple own a night club - and the girl is employed by them as a junior maid - and it is alleged that they tied the girl's naked body on a table and for two days were torturing her with the hot iron in an effort to make her confess that she had stolen 0 dollars that they had lost. When the girl lost consciousness they threw water into her face to revive her - and then continued the torture. When they discovered that the girl was in a bad condition they took her to hospital telling the authorities that she he had burned herself accidentally. Little Spiridoula told her story to the doctors. The story created a sensation throughout Greece - and many letters and presents have arrived at the hospital for the girl. Meantime the police have had to supply a bodyguard for the accused couple to protect them against the fury of the local people.
