1965 - President Johnson Orders Marines into Dominican Republic: President Johnson early today ordered the Marines into the battle - torn Dominican Republic, they were sent in following reports that American and other citizens were in grave danger and that Santo Domingo was becoming a city of fear because of renewed flare up in the civil war. Diplomatic reports from Santo Dokingo say that fighting is till going on around the city although there is little gunfire within the capital itself.
