Apr. 18 An anxious moment as firewalker fell to the ground in the muddy pit, a friend struggles with him to wihdraw the knives from his cheeks before he rolls on them and lacerates his face. The man standing on the right is having his mouth examined after the knives have been pulled out. The firewalkers of Malacca. the Indian people first settled in Malacca more than 200 years ago byt they still maintain their religious customs, Every year they hold the great Firewalking Festival in honor of their deities and those who take part in this Ordeal by fire are expected to spend several preparatory days in prayer and meditation Charcoal fires are lit up in a huge shallow pit and are whit hot at the time of actual walking. Soon after midday the firewalkers take parifying bath in the Malacca River, then they walk dance and jump in a wild procession to the fires all the time working temselves into a frenzy. Some cross the pit in a run, others walk slowly, some stumble and collapse and have to be pulled clear by those who are brave enough to approach the unbearable heat. A paces beyond is theundo Shrine where the men prostrate themselves and give thanks to the deities. Inspite of their ordeal they show no sings of burning
