Feb. 26 The Beatles Beware! The Dave Clark Five Is London's Challenge: There had to be a southern answer to the Beatles. and it came. The Dave Clark Five, five young mods from North London who with Glad All Over at number two are a-battering at the Liverpdlian lid of the top ten. The D.C.5 success story is ordinary, and yet extra-ordinary. Until promoter Harold Davison made his50, 000 contract offer, which turns the group fully professional next March, the group were amateurs, making records on spec. in studios hired by them. Dave Clark, who is the group's drummer, was a film extra, and took time off to record numbers with group. The other four, guiterist Lenny Davidson, bassist Rick Huxley, organist Mike Smith and sexist Dennis Payton also had full-time jobs, respectively, progress clark, lighting designer, man in finance company, and electronics engineer. Come to think of it, not a bad combination of talents for a group that preferred to go it alone! Their sound is Beat. But Beat with Brass. Just how they get such amazing noises out of their3, 000 worth of electronic gear is a closely-guarded secret, but one thing is certain, it's given D.C. a lead in the current swing to the Powerhouse Sound. Glad All Over sold over three-quarters of a million and earned the group15, 000 in a matter of weeks. Then Mr Davison stepped in. Today the Five are still playing at Basildon - these pictures were taken at the Locarno - but under their new contract they will go on a general tour. Within the next couple of weeks the Thames Sound will be out on the group's first E.P. called simply The Dave Clark Five
