David Steel and John Pardoe, Liberal Party leadership
Jul. 07, 1976 - DAVID STEEL IS THE NEW LEADER OF THE LIBERAL PARTY: MR DAVID STEEL was confirmed as the new leader of the Liberal Party. It was calculated that he beat his only rival MR JOHN PARDOE, by a ratio of 2-1. Mr Steel the 38 year old son of a Moderator of the Church of Scotland, is MP for the Scottish border constituency of Roxburgh. He now takes over from Mr Jo Grimond who has been acting as caretaker.
