Mar. 31 The only straight part of the act at the Palladium is when Dean Martin who started his theatrical career as a singer, manages to put over a straight song without interruption from his crazy partner. Martin And Lewis Are Howling Success At Palladium: Putiing on one of the noisiest and craziest turns the Palladium has ever seen, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis scored a tremendous success at the start of their two weeks appearance. Stars of eight Paramount films, Martin and Lewis are also incomparable theatre and night club entertainers, while their gramophone records also have an international following. Martin started his theatrical career as a dance band singer while Lewis started by miming to gramophone records. In 1946 while they were both working at the 500 Club in Atlantic City, they teamed up. Threatened with the sack if they did not get many laughs the two boys went haywire with ad-lib wisecracks, crazy antics and wild comedy, the audience loved it and instead of being sacked they were offered a further engagement. Their act has got crazier and madder ever since and they have often been described as a combination of the Keystone Cops, the Marx Brothers and Abbott and Costello
