Demonstration of Balarc 175 welding transformer
Nov. 11, 1959 - World's Smallest Welding transformer demonstrated: The world's smallest Welding transformer was demonstrated this morning at The Empress C, Manfair. Produced by the Ashton-Young Engineering Company of Kingston-on-Thames, the apparatus is no bigger than a tape recorder and has the highest power for weight ratio of any welding machine ever designed. Its production is made possible by the successful replacement for the first time of copper wire by aluminium foil in the windings. Known as the Balarc 175, it retails at £64-10-0d. Today's demonstration included the cutting into a steel safe to remove a hoard of toys - which are being given to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
