Demonstration of Canadian Pacific car, West Drayton, UK

Dec. 12, 1971 - Demonstration of Canadian Pacific's Hy-Rail unit: One of the most unusual cars ever to arrive in Britain was today demonstrated at West Drayton railway station. British Rail kindly agreed to allow Canadian Pacific railways to display a Hy-Rail unit, one of the most unusual items of the company's rolling stock, which was on a brief visit to Britain. The car, or to use its official designation hy-rail unit, is in fact a typical north American estate car with one big difference - it is designed to run on railway lines as well as roads. It can be adapted from normal road use to become a locomotive in little over three minutes - and that includes adding the obligatory locomotive bell, essential by law in North America. Photo shows T.
