Demonstration by communist youth organisation in Essen

May 05, 1952 - Riots in Essen following a demonstration prohibited by the Government. 12 May 1952 On Sunday, May 11th, 1952, riots took place in Essen, West Germany, between hundreds of communist-ruled Free German Youth organisation FDJ and indigenous police forces. One person was killed, two others suffered serious injuries, while many others were slightly injured. Approximately 100 persons were detained by the police. The official police report reads that approximately 30, 000 youngsters, many of them properly enlisted members of the Free German Youth organisation had flocked to Essen, in order to demonstrate against the General agreement which will soon be signed by the US High Commission and the Government. Though sufficient forces of raiding parties had been transferred to Essen in time, many communists succeeded in infiltrating the city where the riots took place yesterday
