Demonstration of new heavy gun tank, The Conqueror
1954 - The Conqueror The Army's New Heavy Gun Tank On Show: The War Office and the Ministry of Supply announce that the heavy gun tank to be named The Conqueror is now in limited production. Initial issues for troop trials to the British Army in Germany will begin in the next two or three months. This tank will be complementary to and not a replacement of the Centurion Tank. The Conqueror's development involved the solution of many problems in suspension, power and transmission and in the gun control system. Armed with a more powerful gun than the 20-pounder of the Centurion, it will have the latest system for controlling the fire of the gun. It is driven by the latest type of high powered Meteor engine and carries a crew of four. It was shown to the Press for the first time today at the Royal Ordinance Factory, Leeds.
