Demonstration of new hovercraft designed for military use
Mar. 03, 1961 - New Hovercraft Passes Test Designed To Beat The Swamp: The New Hovercraft machine, known as the Germ (Ground Effect Research Machine) proved in a three minute demonstration at Imphal Barracks, York, yesterday, that it can fly with ease three inches above the ground. Piloted by John Chaplin (32) chief hovercraft development engineer for Edilland Aircraft Co, the machine is claimed to be invaluable to the Army for crossing marshes, rivers and other obstacles which hold up present day military transport. It is powered by two 700 cc Royal Enfield Motor Cycle Engines. Photo Shows The Germ, the low flying aircraft designed and built to beat swamps etc seen on her test demonstration flight
