Demonstration of rocket fired escape seat, Oxfordshire
Apr. 17 Three Hundred Feet into The Air In Rocket Escape Seat. New Last-minute Escape Device For High Speed Pilots : Doddle Hay, 38 year old ex-RAF parachute instructor, recently demonstrated the new Rocket-fired ejector Seat designed to help Pilots escape from high speed Planes at low-level. The Seat has been invented and produced by 67 year old James Martin, a Director of the Martin Baker Aircraft Co of Middx. In the demonstration Mr Hay was ejected 300 feet into the air from a ground Status frame and from that height he descended by parachute. With the rocket assisted seat the pilot could escape during the critical stages of Vertical takeoff from aircraft carriers etc. The demonstration, which was witnessed by Admiralty, RAF and US Navy representatives, was at Changeover Airfield, Oxfordshire. Photo Shows Doddle Hay strapped in his pilot seat before the Rocket seat demonstration. In center the rocket shoots him 300 feet into the air and inset top-left, he descends safely by Parachute
