Demonstration to save maternity hospital, London
Feb. 02, 1972 - Mothers And Mothers-To-Be March On Downing Street Over Closure Of Maternity Hospital.: Between 20, 30 mothers and mothers-to-be marched on Downing Street this morning to protect to the Prime Minister Mr Edward Heath, about the proposed closure of their local six-bed maternity hospital. The Albert Road Maternity Hospital at Burnham on Crouch by the North east Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board as part of a renationalisation of resources The board says that the hospital which costs £17, 000 a year to run and handles about 130 births a year, has cost per patient well above the national average. So if this hospital closes the mothers-to-be will have to go to the St Peter's Hospital at Naidon, 12 miles away.
