Jun. 01, 1960 - First public demonstration of the vertical SC1, which looks like a goldfish: The first public demonstration of the Short SC1, Britain's vertical takeoff and landing research aircraft, was given at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Bedford, yesterday. The machine was piloted by chief test pilot Tom Brooke-Smith. Photo shows unique view of the SC1 in which she looks rather like a goldfish. The machine took off vertically, travelled at 200 mph, stopped, and made a hell-drop on the spot
