Demonstration of smoking doll at a school in Watford

Jan. 01, 1970 - Smoking Suzy Gives Demonstration. Suzy - the glass-fibre model especially made to illustrate the effects of smoking - was demonstrated at the Stanborough Park School in Watford. Suzy has been brought there from America by health educator leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist church. You offer Suzy a light, and in a moment she is puffing away nonchalantly. When she has finished her cigarette she turns her back on the class and they see her secret - a pair of see-through glass lungs connected to her mouth and nose by clear plastic tubes. One thing becomes evident, many young people do not realise that there are a variety of solids in tobacco smoke. When the lungs are unscrewed and passed round for individual inspection they are shocked and nauseated by the sight and smell of the mess and tar which stain the glass fibre material through which she breathes.
