Jul. 07, 1953 - The Anti-fare increase riots continue in Calcutta. Police use tear gas - rioters throw bombs.: Life was disrupted in Calcutta once again by yet another general strike in protest against the increase in second class tramway fares. Shops, markets and restaurants were closed. Train services were held up from early morning by demonstrators, and buses and trams were attacked with bombs, acid and stones. Bombs were thrown at a police party in the Bowbazar area by demonstrators - and police used tear gas to quell the rioters.
