Oct. 10, 1958 - Caravan Site Eviction Force Withdraws: Police and bailiffs, who went to the caravan site at Chertsey-lane, Egham, Surrey yesterday, to enforce a High Court order to clear the unlicence site, were withdrawn on the order of Judge P.L.E Rawlings. He adjourned until next Wednesday an application made at Slough County Court for a stay of execution. When the bailiffs arrived, women dragged an old caravan across the entrance to the site. During the next four hours the bailiffs brought in two tractors, a lorry and a Land Rover to tow th caravans away. But one by one the driver told the law: I won't move these people - and four hours after the battle began, police and bailiffs withdrew.
