Jul. 07, 1959 - Police and Dockers Clash in Sydney Harbour Italian Liner Roma Declared Black'. Hundreds of wharf labourers and police clashed at East Circular Quay, Sydney - Australia recently - when two trucks burst through the picket lines in an attempt to carry food to the Italian Liner Roma which had been declared black by Wharfies. Many people were injured in the scenes of violence which have been described as the ugliest seen in Sydney for years. Photo shows Police struggle with two demonstrator- one is on the ground during the clash in Sydney harbour. The liner Roma had been declared Black because her crew had refused to join in the world-wide Italian scamen's strike
