Mar. 21, 1960 - Thirty Four Africans Die In Riots. Armoured Vehicles On The Scene: It is reported that thirty four Africans were shot dead - and a further 100 wounded - when police opened fire on natives at Sharpeville, thirty miles from Johannesburg today. The rioting started during the native campaign against the rule forcing them to carry passes. Africans screaming Africa banieged the local police station for several hours. Jet aircraft which screamed down on them in an attempt to frighten them - only made the Africans more angry. Photo shows Troops - police and armoured vehicles at Sharpeville - during the riots.
