Jul. 11, 1967 - Mao Tse-Tung's Effigy Hanged: Mao Tse-Tung's effigy was publicly hanged from a lamp-post in north Calcutta's business area, Burrabazar, (on July 2). The hanging followed a Public Trial of Mao Tse-tung at a street corner rally near the lamp-post. Speakers at the trial, organised by Burrabazer Youth Moreha (society) condemned Mao as the enemy of the democracy and world peace. They said the Chinese blasting of hydrogen bomb proved that Mao and his followers loathe all world efforts to ban nuclear arms and was thus pushing the nations towards a third world war. The speakers also said that Mao's agents have recently intensified their activity to diarupt peace and democracy in Asia, shiefly in the Chinese border countries. Incident in Eastern India's Nexalbari area (about 65 miles from the Chinese Tibet border) where extremist pro-peking communists have been continuing lawlessness for over two months, were examples of Nao's sinister conspiracisa. Hundreds of people who gathered at the Trial unitedly shouted Yes and raised hands in support of the verdict that Mao Tse-tung was enemy to the peace-longing people around the world and as such he should b hanged'. After the hanging of the effigy, which was part of the All-India Anti-Peking Unity Day, called by theSamyukta Socialist Party, the Jana Sangh and several parties, hundreds marched through Calcutta's streets shouting anti-Chinese slogans.
