Aug. 08, 1973 - Italian guest workers trying to occupy luxurious Frankfurt apartment house: A number of furious Italians- who have to move out of their flats soon tried to occupy an apartment house which is vacant for over a year already in Frankfurt's Westend. They were supported by members of a youth organization of the Social Democratic Party (Jusos) and a radical political Italian organization (Lotta Continua) as well as an Italian tenant's union (Unione Inquilini). However, the demonstrators were stopped by police forces, who prevented them from entering the building by blocking off the entrance doors. The result was a violent uproar, both parties using sticks to defend themselves. After not succeeding the demonstrators pitched three big tents in front of the house, to spend the night there together with their families. In an amiable gesture the police men handed out woolen blankets to the demonstrating Italians to keep them warm for the night.
