1972 - Women Barricade Themselves In House: Two women barricaded themselves into an attic yesterday as bailffs moved into their home, which is to be demolished to make way for the A34 Abingdon by-pass. One of the women, Miss Iris Mason, 53, theatened to throw herself off the roof. She was protesting about the amount of compensation to be paid by the Department of the Environment for the house in Hinskey Hill, Oxford, which she occupies with Miss Kathleen Flower, 88. The two women left the attic five hours later, after talking to their solicitor. As soon as removal men had taken their furniture out a demolition team moved in. Miss Mason said afterwards: We feel we can do nothing more. We made our protest and although we have agreed to leave, we shall carry on the fight for proper compensation.
