Oct. 10, 1974 - Hunger March in Calcutta: Several thousand people recently march through Central Calcutta streets for hours chanting We want food, give us food'. Among them were men and women from distant villages who came to the city in trains and long-distance buses to join the march. The march was organised by Marxist Communists and eight other left parties to draw the governments attention to the acute food scarcity prevailing in India's West Bengal State of which Calcutta is the State capital. According to figures released by political parties about 10 million people of West Bengal's total population of 44 million are now facing starvation.
