Jun. 06, 1976 - 100 People Killed And More Than 1, 000 Injured In South Africa's Worst Outbreak Of Civil Unrest: The worst outbreak of civil unrest in South Africa has claimed the lives of 100 people, and more than 1, 000 have been injured in rioting in Soweto, the African township outside Johannesburg. The rioting began during a march by black students protesting against the use of Afrikaans in lessons. Police opened fire and the rioters set fire to buildings and cars.
