Oct. 10, 1969 - 5th October 1969 Dustmens strike: Contractors move in in Stepney Private contractors were today called in to remove the piles of rubbish blocking Leyden Street, Stepney. The Council Public Cleansing Committee called in the private contractors after the Medical officer of Health confirmed that the rubbish was a danger to health. National talks on the strike will take place in Edinburgh on Thursday, if no agreement is reached, union leaders have threatened to give official backing to the stoppage, which has affected 21 London boroughs.
