Mar. 03, 1956 - The Palace Hat That Cost Just Ninepence: Mrs. Kathleen Lonsdale, one of Britain's top women scientists - wore a hat which cost her ninepence when she went to Buckingham Palace to receive her investiture as Dame of the British Empire. She did not usually wear a hat - so she rummaged through her work basket and found a powder blue lace scarf and some black lace - bought a yard of straw for ninepence - and made herself the hat. Photo shows Mrs. Kathleen Lonsdale - wears her Ninepency hat. She specialises in cyrstalography and lectures at University College, London
