Mar. 18, 1957 - Dr. Roger Bannister Joins The Army World's First Four-Minute-Miler Starts His National Service: Dr. Roger Bannister the world's first four minute miler left his home in Kensington Mansions this afternoon to start his National Service. He joins the Royal Army Medical Corps - as a Lieutenant. He is 27 - his call-up having been deferred since he was 18 - so that he could complete his medical studies. Photo shows Dr. Roger Bannister waves farewell to his wife - who holds that daughter Carol when he left to join the army this afternoon
