Feb. 09, 1959 - The electrical Mouse with a Super Memory': The latest scientific invention of Dr. Claude E. Shannon of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York - is an electrical Mouse with a Super Memory. The Mouse uses - for a brain some of the kind of switching relays found in dial telephone systems. The mouse is a two-inch her magnet with three wheels and copper whiskers and it can quickly solve more than a million different mazes - learning each one rapidly and then instantly forgetting it in order to be ready to learn the next. Its goal - is a Piece of Choose - which is actually an electrical terminal with a bell which rings when the mouse's copper whiskers nudge it. The maze is about half the size of a desk top with aluminum fences which can be rearranged at will in to different slots to create the hardest possible problems for the mouse. Dr. Shannon places the Mouse and the Cheese at different points - and afters pause to get its bearings the Mouse scuttles down the corridors - bumping into fences etc - backing and turning until in the matter of seconds it reaches the Cheese'. Having learned the correct path to the cheese - the mouse is then set down again at any point visited during its explanation - and without making a single false move - it will move rapidly to the cheese'. If it is placed on a part of the maze not previously visited - it will explore it until it reaches a known part - and then move immediately to the cheese'. Photo Shows Dr. Claude E. Shannon the Laboratories mathematician - sets his mouse down on its maze
