145 Miles to the Gallon : Tommy Hancocks, a 73-year-old building contractor, rolls to work on his latest motorised roller skates. They may not look very much like roller skates by the time Tommy has added a drive shaft, a lawn mower engine and a small petrol tank - doing 145 miles to the gallon. Steering is controlled with the feet and everything else with the knees. From a straight position you bend the knees and that lets in the clutch and opens the throttle. You straighten the knees again to apply the brakes. There is also a handbrake in case of emergency
