Dec. 15 Dr. Barnes Wallis Explains His Revolutionary Bomber - The Folding Wing Swallow - To Children. This afternoon's Christmas Lecture for Schools - at the Institution of Civil Engineers was entitled High Speed Communications Link the Commonwealth - by Dr. Barnes Wallis - the 70 year old inventor of the Bouncing Bomb which blasted the Ruhr Dams. With the aid of a model he explained his revolutionary Bomber The Swallow the wings of which are long and tapering and which can move so that they are straight for take-off and landing but swept back like a dart - for flight up to the and a half times the speed of sound - eliminating the need for long runways. The machine can carry an atom bomb for 5, 000 miles without refuelling. The Defence Ministry withdrew support for the aircraft after £1, 500, 000 had been spent on it. The United States Defence Department is very impressed with the amazing machine and have asked the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to make an on-the-spot check for them.
