Nov. 11, 1958 - Naturalist is Human Guinea Pig for sleeping sickness test.: Mr. C.A.W. Guggisberg, author of the several books on natural history, a recognized authority on the subject, and an entomologist in the Kenya Medical Department, has allowed himself to be inoculated with trypanosomas rhodesienes - Rhodesian sleeping sickness, said to be the most dangerous and virulent form of the African scourge, invariably fatal unless treated properly. Main object of the test was to find whether this type of the disease came from certain game animals, and Mr. Guggisberg was inoculated with an organism from the bloodstream of a white rat which had been infected from a bushbuok. Eight days later his temperature reached 106.9 degress, approaching the point where irreparable damage can be done to brain cells and life itself. Nevertheless, after only a week in hospital, he was in the bush among the animals about which he writes - on two weeks sick leave. Photo shows Entomologist C.A.W. Guggisberg back at work among his specimens in the Medical Department, Nairobi, Kenya
